The challenge was to make a building that is a contemporary architectural statement feel high-end and luxurious, while at the same time a relaxed, casual, beach inspired family home.
The palate was inspired by the natural tones of the surrounding sandstone and brush and the ocean fronting the house. This enabled the open plan living areas to spill seamlessly onto the exterior entertaining areas. A strong use of natural materials, like clear stained oak floors, wool upholstery and silk rugs softened the interiors. A simple sand coloured paint on the walls allowed for a gallery like feeling and gave the art, featured lighting and prominent furniture pieces a sense of purpose. Custom joinery was included to allow the inevitable family clutter to be hidden away. The end result is a family home that is as much barefoot casual as boutique hotel. It is simultaneously impressive with its sense of space as well as relaxed and connected to the landscape.
